Admission policy
General Policy Statement
Colfe’s School is a selective, fee-paying school. Children are admitted on the basis of their
success in competitive selection procedures, which include written examinations and interviews.
Unless their children are in receipt of Scholarship or Bursary Awards, parents undertake to pay the
full school fee and any additional charges.
Acceptance of a place at the School implies an acceptance of the School Policies in place as
set out in the School Prospectus, the School Rules and the terms of the Entry Acceptance Form,
which is signed by the parent(s)/guardian(s), when a place is accepted.
Selection Procedures
The precise details of the selection procedure vary according to the age of the pupil. We
endeavour to ensure that all applicants and their parent(s)/guardian(s) are fully briefed about
what is required.
In principle pupils are assessed on the basis of:
performance in a written test or examination; at 7+ and 11+ these consist of papers in English
and Mathematics, an interview with a senior member of staff; a written confidential report
from the present School.
Parents of applicants are informed by an agreed date of the outcome of the application. No
specific marks (raw or percentage) or grades will be given. There is no mechanism for appeal
against a decision, although bona fide enquiries will be considered sympathetically by the
School.
Written Examinations
The dates of examinations are publicised well in advance. Examinations are conducted at
the School.
Full details of the format and content of the examinations and copies of past papers are
available on request.
Written examination scripts are marked, assessed, moderated and scrutinised by senior staff.
Every effort is made to ensure fairness and consistency in the outcomes.

Scholarship and Bursary Awards at 11+ and 16+
Scholarships and means-tested bursaries are available at 11+ and 16+. Further information can be
obtained on request.
Candidates under consideration for academic awards on the basis of their written papers will
be required to attend specific academic interviews.
Parents are specifically advised that all scholarship and bursary awards are made on the basis
of assessed merit at the discretion of the School.
Special Educational Needs
It is important that the School is fully informed of any SEN such as dyslexia or dyspraxia.
Extra time may be offered to pupils in entrance examinations, provided that this is on the
recommendation of an educational psychologist's report. The scripts of pupils with SEN are
scrutinised specifically and sympathetically as part of the selection procedure.
Other Disabilities
The School is aware of its responsibilities under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and
has drawn up an accessibility strategy and plan.
Equal Opportunities
Colfe’s School welcomes applications from children of all races, cultures and religions.
Retention of Pupils
Subject to satisfactory academic progress and conduct a pupil may remain at Colfe’s until the
end of his/her Upper Sixth Year (Year 13).
Pupils proceeding from Year 6 of the Preparatory School to the Senior School at 11+ are required
to sit the School's 11+ entry examination. The results are used for appropriate monitoring of a
pupil's progress and to assess the eligibility of Prep School candidates for academic scholarships.
However a pupil's progress to the Senior School is assumed to be automatic, unless parents have
been clearly informed to the contrary by the Head of the Preparatory School, who in the normal
course of events would expect to give such advice and guidance by the end of Year 5 at the
latest.
Progress to the Lower Sixth Form is subject to the pupil achieving a minimum of 14 points at
GCSE, assuming 3 points for an A*/A grade, 2 points for a B grade and 1 point for a C grade. This
threshold is subject to annual review. |
