Britain may well have talent, and it would appear that a great deal of it is residing in Colfe’s School. The annual Talent Show took place on the evening of Tuesday 9th June, and the staff and students came out in force to support the brave contestants. The Beardwood Theatre was packed and it was ‘standing room only’, as the 13 acts competed for the coveted “Colfe’s Has Talent” trophy. This year, we were treated to six singers, two guitarists, a brother and sister duo, a Year 7 duo, an Irish dancer and two dance groups.
Everyone was in high spirits as the show had been opened by special guest group Electra who are part of Step Up, a performing arts club which uses Colfe’s at the weekends (formed by an ex-Colfeian who now manages the group), and who have recently been signed by Sony. The crowd was in the mood for a fun evening and all the acts were greeted with thunderous applause, until the crunch time came at the end: the votes.
After the audience votes were counted (and it was a very close-run thing) the top two acts were announced: Eri-Ife & Alex (Year 9), going head to head against Henry (Year 7). Eri-Ife and Alex had choreographed an extremely complex and humorous dance routine, whereas Henry went for the Cheesy factor with a rendition of this year’s Eurovision Song Contest winning song, “Fairytale”.
Then the tension mounted as it was over to the three judges to decide between the two. Distinguished judge Piers Morgan (Mr Foxall) started the ball rolling by voting for Eri-Ife and Alex. Then came the turn of Amanda Holden (Ms Oakes). Overwhelmed by the “cute factor” she voted for Henry. The spotlight turned to Mr Nasty, Simon Cowell Mr Bruce). He paused. He waited. He sighed. He reflected. He eventually chose….. Henry. The applause was tumultuous as Henry received the trophy and the audience clapped and sang along as he performed once again.
Very worthy runners-up Eri-Ife and Alex were urged by the judges to try again next year, and other acts of note were: Kemi, who sang a heart-rending version of “Footprints In the Sand”, and came joint third in the voting along with Selina and her awe-inspiring Irish Dancing. Credit must also be given to Olivia and Theo, who both performed compositions that they had written themselves. Rihanna was charged with the daunting task of singing first, and acquitted herself beautifully with “Butterfly Fly Away”, and she was matched by Tanyel, Cecily and Kassia, singing their respective songs so beautifully and making the voting incredibly difficult. “Unexpected” gave us a visual treat with a very well-choreographed dance routine, and James and Rachel proved what a talented family they are, with Rachel accompanying James on the piano, as he sang Fields Of Gold. A final mention must go to “J&S”, a singing duo from year 7. With their matching pink shirts and choice of song (“Beautiful” by Akon) they won the audience’s heart with a performance that was both cute and funny.
The show was an enormous success and looks to have raised around £200 for charity. See you next year!
