Tuesday the 16th June saw the musical recital hall turned into a mathematics class room when twenty-two pupils from local junior schools participated in the Year 5 Mathematics Master Class. Each school sent along their very best mathematicians to enjoy a morning of mathematical games and problem solving. Participating schools included All Saints CE Primary School, Blackheath Preparatory School, St Margarets C of E Primary School and St Olaves Preparatory School. The master class was organised by Mr Vijapura and Miss Ball, who are mathematics teachers in the senior school at Colfe’s, and it was supported by a current Year 12 A level further mathematics class.

The twenty-two pupils were divided into 6 teams and each team was allocated a sixth form supervisor. The teams were given a variety of mathematical games and problems to solve and were awarded points based on their teams’ performance. The teams also completed a relay round in which each team was split into two and one half of the team was reliant on the successful performance of the other half of their team. The top three teams are as follows:

Gold certificates for a score of 78/100 Silver certificates for a score of 77.5/100

Each and every pupil went away with a certificate of participation and the top 3 teams received bronze, silver and gold certificates and also medals. All of the pupils and supervisors said that they had had a great deal of fun and had thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
