Following a successful 15 a-side season, where they reached the last 16 of the Daily Mail
Vase competition, Colfe’s entered the sevens season with confidence. A runner up position at the
Dartford GS tournament earlier in the week proved this wasn’t misplaced and the team arrived at
this prestigious competition on a high. A total of 16 schools from all over London, including Eton
College and St Benedict’s, plus some from further north all took part in the knockout competition.
Convincing wins against Queen Elizabeth School, London Oratory II, and Trinity in the group
stages meant we went through to the quarter finals having only conceded one try and scored twenty
two. This set up our first meeting of the year with local rivals Dulwich College, always a tough
encounter. In a well contested close game, Colfe’s won with two tries in the second half from Sean
Osborn and Charlie Banks and it was another strong performance and we moved into the last four.
In the semi final we met RGS High Wycombe, a school very well respected in the rugby
community and four time previous winners. Colfe’s went score for score in the first half, with only
two successful conversions the difference. Another strong second half performance with a more
physical presence at the breakdown proving a key area resulted in two unanswered tries and a
convincing 28-10 win.
This set up a second final against Whitgift School in a week. Still ruing the missed
opportunity from the Monday, the boys were focused and prepared before kick off. Again the first
half went score for score with the Colfe’s ahead by two points at the break. Some metronomic
restarts from Charlie Banks and excellent ‘press’ defence ensured that Whitgift never had an
opportunity to settle and attack. Numerous turnovers at the breakdown gave us the opportunity to
break and run in three unanswered tries in the second half winning comfortably 42-19.
It was an outstanding effort from the whole squad and an achievement of which they should be
very proud. Well done to all the players.
