Colfe’s Team Mathematics Challenge Report 2010

On the morning of Thursday 25 th February 2010 students from set 1 in years 8 and 9 took part in a Team Maths Challenge in the main hall. A team consisted of two students from year 8 and two from year 9. There were 11 teams in total. The competition consisted of 3 rounds. The first round involved the team working together on a mathematical crossword, the second round was a relay race to answer questions and finally a group round with each team having to solve ten problems. Each round took 30 minutes. The Team Maths Challenge ended with team K winning with a score of 70 points and with team C being runners up with a score of 58 points and in third place was team B with a score of 57 points. The top three teams were awarded gold, silver and bronze medals respectively.

It was a very enjoyable morning with lots of fun and was enjoyed by all those who took part.

Eloise Richardson from the winning team writes:

On the 24 th February 2010, the highest maths sets of years 8 and 9 took part in the Team Maths Challenge.  I’ll admit I wasn’t looking forward to this but was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it.  My team had 2 other year 9s and 2 very clever year 8s!  There were three rounds.  The first was a crossword which was extremely challenging, followed by round two which was a relay race.  This involved lots of running around trying to answer questions, and in my case tripping over chairs!  In the last round we were given a stack of questions which we had to work out in an amount of time.  At the end, we found out that our team had won and received gold medals from the Headmaster.  I was pleased and a little shocked that we’d won but I enjoyed participating very much and thanks must go to Mr Vijapura for organising this event, and the rest of the Maths department.

The winning team members were:

Andrew Joseph, Bhavini Vijapura, Morgan Macgregor, Eloise Richardson, Megan Collett

The runners up were:

Calem Curreen, Daniel Graham, Elliot Roofe, Abdul Rehman

In third place were:
