Saxaphone Fun

Sax playersYear 6 recently spent their music lesson listening to three expert professional saxophone players perform a range of music which demonstrated the history of Jazz. They started in the 1900s with Scot Joplin’s Maple Leaf Rag, and moved through various styles, ending with a piece that demonstrated the sounds of Funk Jazz. Arkwright Success

The Arkwright Scholarship scheme encourages young people to study design and technology at advanced level with the idea of attracting them into engineering and industry where there is a need for people with creative and technical skills. Last term a number of Year 11 pupils took the Scholarship exam and two were successful in getting interviews with potential sponsors. Sarah Loughlin and Phoebe Roth were invited to Cambridge University where a day of aptitude tests, interviews and problem solving tasks were arranged. We will hear the result of the Arkwright Scholarship panel towards the end of this term but Sarah and Phoebe can be confident that their ability as designers has already been recognised.

2010 Biology Challenge

We have just received the results for the 2010 Biology Challenge, the national competition for students in years 9 and 10 to show their knowledge in the Life Sciences. Five Colfe’s pupils: Isobel Britton, George Charalambous, Catherine Cheesman , Julia Cummings and Alastair Porter were outstanding and have achieved Gold Awards. This is the first time that gold has come to Colfe’s in this competition. Special mention must go to George, who won a Bronze Award in last year’s competition when he was in year 9. Silver Awards were won by Tom Bedford, Harry Fisher, Alice Foster, Alex Graham, Ben Khoshnevisan and Manish Patel. This is a tremendous result for the school and reflects the excellence of our students in a national context. Congratulations to all of our award winners. Read more...

Museum of London TripTo supplement the GCSE Latin syllabus a group of six Year Ten students ventured to the Museum of London with Mr Corstorphine and Mr Symeou on Friday 30th April. In the morning we were lucky to receive a talk from the much-televised Curator of the Museum of London and we subsequently handled authentic pieces dating back thousands of years. Read more...

Year 11 Pupil's Poem Wins Two Competitions

Geography Trip To Iceland

Geography Trip To IcelandDuring the Easter break, Ms. McAuliffe took a party of 29 students from Years 8, 9, 10 and 11 to Iceland. This proved to be a timely experience, as they were amongst the first to witness the now famous Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupting into life. Ms McAuliffe writes: We enjoyed a truly exceptional trip to Iceland at the end of March, a week after the first eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull fissure volcano in the South of the country near Vik. After a rigorous risk assessment and the reassurance of various experts, it was decided that we should go ahead with our expedition, and I am really pleased we did. Read more...

My World War II Workshop Experience

Tin hatOn Thursday 29th April Year 6 were taken down to the hall to learn about WWII. Waiting there were two men dressed in World War II clothes pretending to be actual soldiers from the war, one man who is actually in the war today and a woman. The men dressed as WWII soldiers had dull green jackets and heavy backpacks with various other smaller bags. One of them had a Lee Enfield bolt action rifle, a 2 litre water canister and they both had green army caps. The modern day soldier was dressed in a camouflaged t-shirt, shorts and hat , along with some black boots. Read more...

My Sleepover at School

thumbs upOn Friday 23rd April 2010, Year 3 had a sleepover at school. The boys were divided into two classrooms and the girls were all put into one classroom together. We put our luggage in these rooms then went to the hall for a quick kit-kat and drink – yum! After our tasty snack we went to the swimming pool. We had lots of fun, the floats were out and we played games with our friends. Around 6pm we all had dinner. I had saveloy and chips along with orange juice to drink. After dinner we went outside to play football and kingball. This was fun and we really enjoyed it. We finished playing outside at 7pm. Read more...
